A Tragic Shift Only 12 Months Has Made in the US
Twelve months back, the situation was entirely distinct. Prior to the national election, reflective Americans could admit America's serious imperfections – its inequities and disparity – yet they continued to identify it as the US. A free society. A country where legal governance meant something. A state guided by a dignified and ethical official, despite his older age and declining health.
Nowadays, this autumn, many of us scarcely know the land we inhabit. Persons suspected of being unauthorized foreigners are collected and pushed into vans, at times refused legal rights. The East Wing of the White House – is undergoing demolition for a grotesque dance hall. The leader is harassing his adversaries or perceived antagonists and demanding federal prosecutors transfer a huge total of public funds. Soldiers with weapons are being sent across metropolitan centers on false pretexts. The military command, rebranded the War Department, has – in effect – liberated itself of routine media oversight as it spends what could amount to close to a trillion USD in public funds. Institutions, law firms, news companies are submitting under the president’s threats, and wealthy elites are handled as aristocracy.
“The United States, only a few months ahead of its 250th birthday as the planet's foremost free society, has fallen over the limit into authoritarianism and fascism,” Garrett Graff, stated recently. “In the end, faster than I thought feasible, it transpired in America.”
Every morning starts to new horrors. And it is difficult to grasp – and agonizing to acknowledge – how deeply lost we have become, and the rapid pace with which it unfolded.
Yet, it is known that the leader was duly elected. Following his deeply disturbing initial presidency and even after the cautions associated with the awareness of the rightwing blueprint – even after Trump himself declared plainly he planned to rule as a tyrant only on the first day – enough Americans selected him rather than his Democratic opponent.
While alarming as the current reality is, it’s even scarier to recognize that we’re only several months into this administration. Where will another 36 months of this deterioration leave us? And suppose that timeframe transforms into a more extended duration, since there is no one to restrain this ruler from opting that additional tenure is necessary, perhaps for national security reasons?
Granted, there is still hope. There are legislative votes in 2026 which might create a new balance of power, if Democrats retake one or both houses of the legislature. We have elected officials who are striving to exert certain responsibility, for example Democratic congressmen that are starting a probe concerning the try to cash appropriation by federal prosecutors.
And a leadership election three years from now could begin the path to healing precisely as the previous vote put us on this regrettable path.
There are numerous residents marching in urban areas across municipalities, like they performed recently at democracy demonstrations.
Robert Reich, wrote recently that “the great sleeping giant of the nation is awakening”, similar to past following the Red Scare in the 1950s or throughout the Vietnam war protests or during the Watergate scandal.
On those occasions, the tilting vessel eventually was righted.
Reich says he understands the indicators of that resurgence and observes it occurring currently. For proof, he references the large-scale demonstrations, the extensive, multi-faction opposition to a personality's dismissal and the almost universal rejection by reporters to agree to the defense department’s demands they report only what is sanctioned.
“The sleeping giant consistently stays dormant until specific greed grows too toxic, an specific act so disrespectful of societal benefit, certain violence so noisy, that it is compelled other than to stir.”
It's a positive outlook, and I respect the author's seasoned opinion. Possibly he may turn out correct.
At the same time, the crucial issues persist: will the nation ever recover? Is it possible to restore its status globally and its devotion to constitutional order?
Or do we need to admit that the historical project worked for a while, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?
My negative thoughts indicates that the latter is accurate; that all may indeed be finished. My positive feelings, however, tells me that we have to attempt, through all methods possible.
In my case, as an observer of the press, that involves urging journalists to commit, more fully, to their mission of scrutinizing authority. For some people, it may be working on political races, or planning demonstrations, or developing approaches to safeguard electoral access.
Not even one year prior, we existed in a very different place. Twelve months later? Or after another term? The truth is, we are uncertain. Our sole course is to strive to persevere.
What’s Giving Me Hope Now
The engagement I encounter in the classroom with young journalists, who are equally idealistic and realistic, {always
