California's Governor Acknowledges He Is Evaluating a 2028 Presidential Run
Gavin Newsom, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he will determine whether to run for president in 2028 after the 2026 elections conclude.
"Yeah, it would be dishonest if I said no," Newsom commented when questioned about giving serious thought to a campaign for president post the 2026 midterms. "I'd just be lying. And I can't do that."
Newsom's current term as California's leader concludes in early 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. Yet, he noted that any determination is a long way off.
"It's up to destiny," he said.
Rising Profile as a Trump Critic
The California governor has stepped forward as a prominent opponent of the current federal leadership, employing his online platforms and advocating for a ballot measure that would expand Democratic House seats in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This action has drawn criticism from political opponents.
Federal Funding Dispute
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor shows no concern about the state's residents in a Sunday interview on a major news network. Duffy disclosed plans to cut government money from California and warned eliminating the power to grant commercial driver's licenses.
"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from California," Duffy said, following a this week's deadly accident in California involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that led to three deaths and injured individuals.
The governor's team noted that the federal government had renewed the worker's status repeatedly, which permitted him to obtain a CDL under national regulations.
The transportation secretary had previously stated he was holding back additional funds from California for failing to implement linguistic standards for commercial drivers.
Pointed Reply from the Governor's Office
"Former D-list reality star, now cabinet member, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," Newsom's office responded in a last month's release responding to Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: California truck drivers had a accident mortality rate nearly 40% lower than the national average. Texas – the sole state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate substantially higher than California. Facts don't lie. This administration is dishonest."
Public Opinion and Political Future
A recently conducted survey showed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and 48% of all registered voters indicated that Newsom must consider running for the White House in 2028. In recent years, public support for the governor has increased to an typical level of a third from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has decreased from an mean of more than 40% to 38.4%.
Some time ago, Newsom commented while traveling several swing states that he had "uncertainty" about his intentions for the next presidential election.
He noted his earlier challenges, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the early childhood.
"The thought that a individual who got 960 on his SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, amazing," he said. "Who the hell knows? I am eager to see who emerges in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the American people."
