American flight controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they continue to work unpaid amid the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has announced.

"These professionals are wearing thin," the official told Fox News on the weekend, as some flights were halted on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

After the government shut down on 1 October, flight controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were told to continue performing their jobs uncompensated.

But a number have been missing, causing airports to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has exacerbated setbacks due to weather and other issues.

Over three thousand US flights were delayed on Sunday, and the secretary stated he anticipates the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I observe the stress," Duffy said in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had spoken to multiple professionals to hear their concerns firsthand.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I work for Uber, am I able to secure an alternative of income to cover expenses?'" he continued.

Duffy further mentioned that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airfields said flights would be held up due to a shortage of employees - one of the highest after the closure began.

The American federal closure entered its twenty-sixth day on the weekend, rendering it the second-longest halt in the past.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that flight authorities would slow down the quantity of planes in the sky if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he declined to respond directly when asked if it was safe to travel by air in the US, and instead made a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I need my staff concentrating on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at their households," Duffy said.
