Three members of law enforcement were killed and no fewer than 15 additional individuals were hurt in an apparently deliberate blast caused by gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

Event Timeline

The detonation took place as officers and emergency crews entered the residence in the vicinity of the city of Verona to carry out an eviction order for three siblings who were older adults.

Each of the three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri military police.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the location and one more individual who fled following the blast was apprehended soon after. All three have been transported to medical facility.

The blast could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the scene showed the building turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” said the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to displace the three family members in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The president of the Veneto area, President Zaia, stated the property was facing an court order due to financial obligations accrued by the property owners.

Negotiators had been sent to speak to the family members who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the police arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the residents set off the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander the police commander stated to reporters.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the blast directly hit our personnel,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also found at the residence, the interior minister said.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the explosion consisted of 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

According to the local prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had no electricity.

He was convinced the blast had occurred on a story above the access point and stated to journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the incident, he said personnel had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas canisters being turned on”.

Local Response

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents told reporters, mentioning that the trio had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in honoring the three men who had died in the service of their country.
