The Lions of Teranga's Rising Star Lamine Camara: From Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.
As I walk into the space, Lamine Camara picks up a football he clings to throughout the conversation. This serves as a simple symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” states this Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His resolve and natural ability convinced clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the hardest person to convince didn't come from a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He was against me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.
Surmounting Initial Obstacles
In time, on “one beautiful day,” he received his dad's approval to pursue his path in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.
However, the famed academy – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the best player in a regional tournament, the scouts were “astonished” to discover he was not tied down. They moved fast. “I was taken straight to the training centre. They prevented me from going back home,” Camara said.
An Unforgettable Season and Continental Breakthrough
This move put him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his country to the title and being named player of the tournament.
A month later, he signed for FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” states the 21-year-old. He resides alone in Europe, a choice his family support to keep him focused.
Influences and On-Field Identity
Off-field noise are not really a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “humility” and superb skills. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. He admits a need to control his competitive fire, having been shown red at the start of his spells at each French club. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes.
Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions
With his current club, he values learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” he said.
Right now, attention is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England on their soil…,” he says, referencing a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
On a potential future move to the Premier League, he remains focused on Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he insists. He is often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about targeting the senior top prize in the future.
“We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it instills confidence.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions as he aims to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own legendary path in the game.
