The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often marked by bleakness, this show's sincerity found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about following this charming family navigate their simple existence.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing layer of irony. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
What Comes Next
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to bask in the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
