Powerful winter gusts caused walls to collapse upon flimsy tents sheltering Palestinians displaced by war in Gaza, killing no fewer than four people. This tragedy underscores the perilous living conditions that continue after more than 24 months of intense bombardment and severe shortages of aid.

Ceasefire Offers No Respite from Severe Elements

Although a ceasefire has been in effect from October, humanitarian organizations state that Palestinians do not have the adequate housing required to survive recurring cold-weather events.

Officials at Shifa hospital, which received the victims, said on this week that the deceased include two women, a young female, and a man.

In a separate incident, the local health authority announced on Tuesday that a one-year-old boy died of hypothermia during the night.

"The world has enabled us to experience loss of life in all its forms," stated Bassel Hamouda after the burial. "While it is correct the bombing may have temporarily stopped, but we have seen every conceivable cause of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Relatives Crushed in Shelter Collapse

According to Shifa hospital, three people of a single household — 72-year-old Mohamed Hamouda, his 15-year-old relative, and his son's wife — were fatally injured when an eight-metre high wall collapsed onto their tent in a coastal area of the city. At least 5 others were hurt in the incident.

Family members on Tuesday began removing the rubble that had entombed their loved ones and rebuilding the temporary homes for those who remained.

Humanitarian Distribution and Continuing Crisis

The UN and its humanitarian partners were distributing tents, tarps, blankets and clothing as well as food and sanitation supplies across Gaza, said the relevant UN coordination body.

The majority of Palestinians reside in improvised shelters because their homes were turned into rubble over the course of the war. Humanitarian organizations contend an insufficient amount of shelter materials are entering Gaza during the truce.

Casualty Numbers Since the Ceasefire

Another Winter of Struggle

Gaza’s residents of more than two million people has been fighting to fend off the freezing temperatures and bad weather away while enduring lack of assistance and a absence of more substantial transitional shelter, which is urgently needed during the winter months. This marks the third cold season since the conflict between the state and Hamas began on a date in late 2023, when fighters stormed into Israeli territory and murdered around 1,200 people and abducted 251 more into Gaza.
